HELEN (HELENA) DE LUCAS

Helen (Helena) De Lucas immigrated from Germany in 1870, as a teenager. She married Michel (or Michael) De Lucas about 1876 and settled in Carrollton. In the 1880s, Michel De Lucas is listed in the city directory as a confectioner at 12 Dublin Street. Beginning in 1891, however, the confectionary business at that address is listed under the name of Mrs. Helena De Lucas, and Michel has a new job as clerk of Fourth City Court. Unlike many of the women in this exhibit, Mrs. De Lucas was not a widow forced by necessity to take up her husband’s business. Her name appears a number of times in the newspapers of the day for serving on various committees for community events in Carrollton.

Mrs. De Lucas advertised her services in 1889.
