SARAH MIDDLETON HUYE

Sarah Middleton Huye was the widow of George Huye, who opened a box factory at 71 Chartres Street in 1850, manufacturing wood, cigar, and paper boxes. After her husband’s death in 1876, his widow took over management, later assisted by two of her sons. In 1885, Industries of New Orleans wrote: “The concern is a fine one. It is 25 x 100 in size and is four stories high. It employs between thirty and fifty men, girls and boys. Its trade is principally with Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and the Gulf sections, but it ships also to Mexico. Paper and shelf boxes are its specialty.” The widow Huye died in 1890, and her children continued to operate the factory, which moved to 315 N. Peters.

Mrs. Huye did not own the building that housed her factory, but the business itself had substantial value. These pages from the inventory of her estate give some idea of the assets she built up during her lifetime.
