CORNELIA WATKINS CHALIFOUR

Cornelia Watkins Chalifour was born in Madison Parish and married Frank Chalifour of New Orleans, a candymaker. Widowed sometime in the late 1870s, Mrs. Chalifour became a successful manufacturer and wholesaler of yeast cake (compressed yeast for baking). In 1885, her yeast cakes were included in the World’s Industrial and Cotton Centennial exposition’s display of Louisiana products, and at the American Exposition, which succeeded the Cotton Exposition, she won a gold medal. She died in 1916 at the age of 74 after a fall from her veranda.

An ad for Mrs. Chalifour's famous yeast cakes.
