ANGELA GIARGIA PAVIA

Angela Giargia Pavia, a native of Italy, took over operation of her late husband’s boot and shoe manufactory on Royal Street in order to support her children. He had died in 1879, leaving the business with a debt of $5000. She was successful enough to pay her husband’s debts, but “the present depression in trade” and other factors forced her to seek protection from her creditors in 1886. She later moved to St. Martinville (the 1910 census lists her as owning a dry goods store there), where she died in 1924.

This document from the suit against her creditors lists finished shoes along with shoemaking equipment and furnishings in her store on Royal Street.

A city tax bill for the Pavia property, showing another way that she contributed to the New Orleans economy. The building appears to still be standing at 630 Royal Street.
