MATHILDA KOLSKY HEIMAN

Mathilda Kolsky Heiman was born in New Orleans in 1857. She married Isidore Heiman in 1881. Mrs. Heiman owned retail shoe stores (also selling trunks, valises, etc.) at 153 and 175 Poydras Street. In 1886, she filed suit against her creditors, citing “the general dullness of business, the great competition in [her] line of work, the heavy expenditures necessary for rents, clerk hire, [etc.],” resulting in a steady loss of money.

The petition in Mathilda Kolsky, wife of Isidore Heiman vs her creditors. The record shows that Heiman had liabilities totaling $7515.71, including $700 rent due for 175 Poydras and $1080 for #153. Her assets, meanwhile, comprised only $1130.89, including merchandise (boots, shoes, trunks, and valises) worth $190.12 at #175 and $270.57 at #153.
