THERESA HAUSMANN

Theresa Hausmann, a native of Germany, came to New Orleans with her husband Henry and two sons in 1870. That same year, Mr. Hausmann purchased a half interest in an electro-plating company and established the firm of Henry Hausmann. Two daughters were added to the family before Henry died suddenly in the yellow fever epidemic of 1878. With young children to provide for, Mrs. Hausmann took charge of the business herself. She changed the name to “T. Hausmann” and moved to Poydras Street. In time, her two sons joined the business, which gradually moved its emphasis from plating to jewelry. In 1924, shortly before Mrs. Hausmann’s death, Hausmann’s acquired the stock of the long-established jewelry store A.B. Griswold and Co. and moved to what would become its flagship store at 730 Canal St.

Her obituary called her “a pioneer woman in the business world of the city.”
