SUSIE A. CARTER

In May, 1909, Susie A. Carter was one of eight African American women who passed the licensing examination for midwives required by the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners. A month later, a Times-Picayune article included her in the list of trained nurses working at the newly opened Negro Baptist Seminary. She appears in each of the federal censuses from 1910-1940, listed as a nurse, either in private business or employed in a hospital. We know that she owned her home at 123 N. Roman St. She died in 1952, at the age of 75.

In 1913 and 1914, she advertised her services as a midwife in the Woods Directory.
