ADELAIDE SEGOND CARRICK

Adelaide Segond Carrick was born in 1771 and married James Carrick in 1797. After his death she inherited, among other properties, lots and buildings on Levee Street (now Decatur) between St. Philip and Ursulines. In 1823, she filed a petition with the Conseil de Ville (City Council) complaining that the value of her property was diminished by the ongoing construction of public buildings (the Vegetable Market) and asking that the work be halted, and the structures taken down. Receiving no response to the petition, Mrs. Carrick wrote this letter to repeat her demands, but the Council still did not take the desired action. Mrs. Carrick's buildings are still standing, now housing the Santa's Quarters Christmas shop and other businesses. Another of her buildings, at 722 Toulouse Street, has also survived. It is well known as the first New Orleans residence of Tennessee Williams and is now owned by The Historic New Orleans Collection.
