London Avenue Canal, North from Gentilly Road, 1900-1905 This photograph was taken shortly after the turn of the 20th century in what was to become the Gentilly section of New Orleans. As an employee of the Sewerage & Water Board, Allison was likely quite familiar with the London Avenue Canal, and probably also appreciated the beauty of this “rural” scene. Actually the background that we see here, over one-hundred years ago, is probably not much different from what is there today, for a large tract of undeveloped land -- the former Rose Hill Cemetery -- remains along the Canal between Virgil Boulevard and Francis W.
