Dr. Henry Dickson Bruns (1859-1933) was a native of Charleston, South Carolina, who moved with his family to New Orleans at an early age. He graduated from the University of Virginia and from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. Dr. Bruns was one of the founders of the New Orleans Polyclinic, the forerunner of the Graduate Department of the Tulane School of Medicine. He served as professor of diseases of the eye at Tulane and was also active in promoting nurse education in New Orleans. In addition to the medical profession, Dr. Bruns was also quite active in Louisiana politics. He played a leadership role in the 1892 anti-lottery movement, and participated in numerous other reform organizations. He was a member of the 1898 constitutional convention, where he fought, unsuccessfully, for woman's suffrage in Louisiana.
