Image of the Month
September 2009

This photograph is already viewable elsewhere on the NOPL web site (in the Sewerage & Water Board Series of the Alexander Allison collection), but we like it enough to highlight it here in September 2009. It shows the London Avenue Canal at a point just north of Gentilly Boulevard sometime in the early part of the twentieth century. Allison probably captured this pastoral scene from outside the old "drainage machine" that predated the modern pumping station built elsewhere on the Canal around the time of World War II. The original draining facility was not able to drain much of the area north of Gentilly Boulevard so that residential development was late in coming to that part of town. Dillard University opened just across the Canal from this site--but not until 1935.
