Image of the Month
November 2009

City Hall photographer Joseph C. Davi took this photograph of Poydras Street during its widening project in April 1966 from atop the International Trade Mart building. Half of the squares on the downtown side of Poydras had already been cleared of buildings but the work of converting empty lots into new traffic lanes had not yet been started. Many of the buildings visible in this view are no longer standing, including those on the uptown side of Poydras and, of course, the Rivergate (shown under construction in the center foreground). The future site of the Superdome appears in the distance (just across from City Hall) still occupied by warehouses. It was after the opening of the big stadium in mid-1975 that the true renaissance of Poydras Street came to fruition. The same view, shot today, would look vastly different.
