One of the visual treasures in the City Archives is a set of drawings depicting the first twenty schools opened by the McDonogh School Fund in the Crescent City. The drawings apparently were prepared as an inventory of the Fund's buildings as they existed during the early 1880s rather than as plans for construction. In addition to front elevation renderings the collection also includes side elevations and floor plans for each of the school buildings. This image was scanned from a black & white photographic reproduction of the original water-color elevation plan for McDonogh #11 elementary school at 2009 Palmyra Street. The building remains standing--still a beautiful example of nineteenth century architecture despite some alterations from its original appearance. It sits, though, within the footprint for the proposed new LSU teaching hospital so its future is, at least, uncertain.
