Image of the Month
May 2008

This photograph was taken by Harry D. Johnson probably right after the beginning of the twentieth century. It shows, of course, the Peristyle in City Park, perhaps one of the most photographed structures in the Crescent City outside of the Vieux Carre. We know nothing of the people posing in the photograph. Perhaps they had attended an event in the pavilion itself, or maybe they had walked over to the Park after dining at the restaurant across City Park Avenue (now Ralph's on the Park).

NOPL's collection of Harry Johnson's photographs has been online since the summer of 1999 but this one, along with four other prints, scenes, lay "hidden" among the City Park prints of the Alexander Allison collection until several weeks ago. They're now all scanned and available for viewing along with the rest of the Johnson collection.
