This formal portrait of Archbishop Joseph Francis Rummel was taken by local photographer C. Bennette Moore sometime between the Archbishop's installation (May 15, 1935) and Moore's death (December 8, 1939). A native of Germany, he came to the U.S. as a young child and grew up in the German section of New York City. After ordination, Father Rummel spent his early priesthood in his adopted city. In 1928, he became Bishop of the Diocese of Omaha, Nebraska and came to the Crescent City seven years later. Archbishop Rummel served New Orleans for twenty-nine years, though he was assisted by Archbishop John Patrick Cody for the last three years after suffering serious injury in a fall. He died in New Orleans on November 8, 1964.
