On Saturday evening, January 19, 1935, Dr. Louis Maumus was driving on Chef Menteur Highway when his automobile was struck by another vehicle driven by Dr. Merrick W. Swords. The two doctors suffered serious injuries and a passenger in the Swords car, Louis Saloy, was killed instantly. It was the fourth fatal motor vehicle accident in New Orleans since the beginning of the year. This photograph of the black Chevrolet sedan driven by Dr. Swords was taken a few days later in the basement of Police Headquarters by Charles A. Kincade of NOPD's Bureau of Identification.
