This photograph captures the excitement of the 1965 Rex parade as the Boeuf Gras float rolls through the Canal Street crowd on Mardi Gras (March 2). The New Orleans Police Department estimated that more than 500,000 people lined Canal Street and St. Charles Avenue despite a light rain that fell during the day. On Ash Wednesday, the Sanitation Department collected 250 tons of trash along those two thoroughfares and in the French Quarter. Roddy Paul, writing in the Times-Picayune, described the city as "...completely prostrate in its exquisite transport into merry madness...." In other words, it was a typical Mardi Gras!
