Orleans Parish Civil and Criminal Courts
Finding Aids, Inventories and Indexes
The City Archives houses, on deposit from the Civil District Court, all records of the Orleans Parish civil courts (1804-1926). The City Archives also holds the records of the Orleans Parish criminal courts (1830-1931).

Link here for a A Brief Explanation of the Orleans Parish Civil & Criminal Court System.

For records that follow the dates outlined above, please contact either the Clerk of Civil District Court for the Parish of Orleans or Orleans Parish Criiminal Clerk's Office.

Indexing for most of the Orleans Parish civil courts is available either in published volumes or on microfilm. In addition, Louisiana Division/City Archives staff and volunteers have prepared indexes for several courts that came to the Archives with no extant indexing. These indexes are linked below. Additional indexes are in progress and will be added here as they are completed. Finding aids for the various courts not formally described below are also in progress.

Indexing for the Orleans Parish criminal courts is fragmentary prior to 1880 and after 1918. Finding aids for the criminal courts not formally described here are forthcoming.

Microfilmed court records are available for in-house use during regular hours. Unfilmed records (including civil court lawsuits and all criminal court records after 1853) may not be available on the day of request and can be used only by prior appointment or arrangement.

The records of the Court of Probates (1804-1846) and the Second District Court (1846-1880) have been digitized by FamilySearch.org and are (partially) available online. Docket books and extant indexing to those docket books for a number of the civil courts listed below have also been digitized. See the individual finding aids for further information.
