Historical Note

Ellen Hazeur was born in New Orleans and attended Xavier University and Tulane University School of Law. After practicing law in California, she returned to New Orleans and practiced as a plaintiff's attorney. In 1994, Hazeur was elected as the first female City Councilmember to represent District E, an area including the Lower Ninth Ward and New Orleans East. She served on the City Council from 1994-2000. Some of her main policy initiatives included the redevelopment of Lincoln Beach in New Orleans East, as well as land use and zoning legislation. She also served on the Jazzland Task Force Committee. Following her tenure on the City Council, she served as First City Court Clerk from 2001-2018. In 2018 she was elected Division A judge on the Civil District Court.

Scope and Arrangement

The records in this collection span the years 1994-1999 and are mostly kept in the order in which they were received from her office. Interesting topics include both Lincoln Beach redevelopment and the planning of the Jazzland theme park. In the following records, Hazuer is sometimes referred to by her married name, "Ellen Hazeur-Distance." The inventory below represents the entirety of the materials transferred to the City Archvies from Coucilmember Ellen Hazeur's office.
