Biographical Note

Jacquelyn Brechtel Clarkson was elected to the Council District C seat in 1990 and served until 1994, when she lost the seat to Troy Carter. She was re-elected to District C in 2002. In 2006, she sought election as an At-Large candidate, but was narrowly defeated by Arnold Fielkow. In 2007, she ran successfully for the At-Large seat in a special election following the resignation of Councilmember Oliver Thomas. She was re-elected to this seat for a full four-year term in 2010.

Prior to holding pubic office, Clarkson was active in the business community as a realtor. In 1995, following her first Council District C term, she was elected to two terms in the Louisiana House of Representatives (District 102).

Scope Note

The records were received by the City Archives in two deposits, reflecting the Councilmember's first District C term (1990-1994) and her At-Large terms (2007-2014). No records were received from Clarkson's second District C term (2002-2006).

District C records (1990-1994): Boxes 1 - 18 are correspondence/subject files and reports reflecting broad topics that the Council considered during Clarkson's first term in the District C office, 1990-1994, with emphasis on issues of particular relevance to Council District C and on materials relating to the NOPSI buyout debate. The folder titles are those used by Council member Clarkson's office. (Specific folder titles in boxes 1, 4, 6, and 7A and 7B were not recorded in the inventory since all folders in those boxes are related to a particular topic.)

At Large Records (2007-2014): The records of Councilmember-At-Large Clarkson include both digital and paper files. In transferring the records to the City Archives, Councilmember Clarkson's staff followed a pre-approved retention schedule. Very little correspondence was transferred and the paper files that were received are fragmentary and reflect primarily a sampling of routine constituent matters from 2012 and 2014, with one folder from 2014. Also transferred were printed copies of the Councilmember's daily schedule. The digital files include press releases (2007-2014; PDF format) and photographs (in JPEG format); with the exception of one small set of photos from January-April, 2007, the photographs document events in 2012-2014.
