Court Records


The City Archives & Special Collections department will only provide copies of court records on microfilm. Original Court Records that are not on microfilm must be viewed in person.


Criminal Court Records


We do not provide copy services for Criminal Court Records. Criminal Court Records can be viewed in person only. Please see the Research Guide for more information on requesting records.


Civil Court Records

Records from the County Court of the Territory of New Orleans (1804-1807) and the Superior Court of the Territory of New Orleans (1804-1813) are closed to researchers and cannot be duplicated.


Civil Court Record Search & Record Requests

Court Record Search & Copy Services Rates Information
Court Record Search with citation $2.00 per name and type of court record Each type of probate record (i.e. succession, will, inventory) will be charged.
Court Record Copies without citation $3.00 per name and type of court record Each type of probate record (i.e. succession, will, inventory) will be charged.
Court Record Copies $2.00 per page (pages 1-20), $3.00 per page (pages 21-). Includes entire record.


Search & Record Request (with citation)

The City Archives & Special Collections department will only provide copies of court records on microfilm. Staff will search for the court record and provide a page count by email.

Please provide the following information

If ordering records from the Court of Probates, the fee is $2.00 to search each type of probate record you are seeking (I.e. succession, will, or inventory). In other words, if you request a copy of the succession of John Doe, the fee is $2.00. If you are also seeking his will and inventory, you need to send an additional $2.00 for each.

Please note that each different variation of a name will be charged.

Fees:$2.00 for staff to search for the record and provide a page count by email.


Once a page count has been provided, you can request a copy of the case

We cannot copy selectively from the record. We will copy the entire record.

Fees: $2.00 per page to copy pages 1-20, then $3.00 per page for any additional pages.


Search & Record Request (without citation)

Archives staff can search Court Indexes for names and provide a page count, if found. The first item located by staff using indexes and information provided will be used. Staff will research to the best of their ability, but cannot guarantee the item. We will only search indexed courts.

Please specify whether you would prefer paper copies through the mail or pdfs through email.


Please enclose a check or money order (payable to New Orleans Public Library) for each request. No refunds.

Allow 14 business days for a response. Requests are handled in the order in which they are received, and we cannot accept "rush" orders.

All searches will cover New Orleans Only.

Only 5 citations or individual requests should be submitted at a time.

We will provide the best copy possible from our microfilm or digital content. We cannot guarantee complete legibility of photocopies due to the quality of some of the microfilm.

Requests outside of those listed can be addressed to archivist@nolalibrary.org. The Archives is unable to digitize original materials and large sections of printed materials such as books and reports.
