Changes in Street Names, Old and New
Period 1852 to Current Date, Dec. 1st 1938

In 1938 the "City Hall Archives" produced a typewritten volume titled "Alphabetical Index of Changes in Street Names, Old and New Period 1852 to Current Date, Dec. 1st 1938." Gray B. Amos was the compiler. It was one of a number of WPA-sponsored projects conducted in the New Orleans City Archives, then located in City Hall. The original volume, and several photocopies, have been well-used by archives staff and researchers. Through the assistance of Louisiana Division volunteer Randy Bibb, the City Archives is now able to begin offering an online version of this valuable project.

We present the online version in alphabetical order by streetname, with a separate page for each letter of the alphabet. Both old and new names are included in the "Street Name" column. The "District(s)" column lists the relevant municipal district(s) for each individual name change. The "Notes" column provides details of each name change. The "Ordinance" column gives the ordinance number and series that effected the change and the "Date" column gives the date the ordinance was passed. Notations to "see N umber List" refer to another WPA-sponsored City Archives product, "Corrected--Index, Alphabetical and Numerical, of Changes in Street Names and Numbers, Old and New, 1852 to Current Date" (1938), also compiled by Gray B. Amos.
