Opera was New Orleans' cultural glory throughout
the nineteenth century. This city had its own self-supporting, resident company which,
for much of the century, offered the best opera to be found in America. Its superiority
was especially marked before the Civil War when the presentation of opera in other
American cities was sporadic and transient.
