ELIZABETH WILSON RICKETTS PATTERSON

Elizabeth Wilson Ricketts Patterson was a native of New Orleans, born in 1868. She married Herbert E. Patterson in 1887, but he died seven years later.

As this document shows, a local police officer found her to be a “poor widow” in 1899 and therefore deserving of a free permit for her notions store. She remained in business at the Annunciation Street location (where her mother and brothers lived) for several years until she married Alexander Oliver Smith in 1901. He was an engineer in the sugar industry and had business in various sugar-producing locations outside of New Orleans. The 1910 census lists Alexander and Elizabeth living in Puerto Rico, but they were back home by 1915. Elizabeth Smith died in 1953.
