AMELIA E. MATHIEU

Amelia E. Mathieu was a dressmaker and milliner at 55 Chartres Street. She had been in business for “some years past” when she filed suit against her creditors in 1882. She had lost about $900 due to fire and robbery, her investments were “unremunerative,” and her stock had depreciated in value, leaving her unable to take care of her liabilities. Apparently she recovered, as she is listed in later city directories as a dressmaker on Carondelet Street.

This page from the suit record includes the names of women employed by Mathieu as seamstresses. The legal process was scheduled to end with the April 22, 1882 sale of the contents of the store, described in a newspaper advertisement as including, “Hats, Velvets, Satins, Plumes, Ribbons, Combs, Counters, Show Cases, Mirrors, etc.”
