PAULINE MARCHAND
Pauline Marchand operated a dry goods or fancy goods store at 150 Canal St. (between Bourbon and Dauphine) during the 1850s. She may have had an earlier location in the Vieux Carré. By 1854 she was experiencing financial difficulties and eventually surrendered her property to her creditors. Court proceedings indicate that her business inventory was worth $6000, and store fixtures another $800. Her debts, though, exceeded $8500, including $575 in rent. Among the items surrendered, and eventually sold at auction, were “fashionable bonnets, shawls, scarfs, dresses, wreaths, and other articles of women’s wear.” |
