Although it was styled as an amendment to the 1805 Charter the law that took effect in 1836 deserves recognition as a new charter if only because of the undeniably dramatic effect that it had on the city’s geography if not on the course of its history. The essential geographic change wrought by the 1836 Charter is presented in its very first section.
