Parent/Caregiver Workshops

All workshops are designed for parents and caregivers of children ages birth to five.

Parent/caregiver workshops are free, interactive, fun early literacy workshops presented by trained library staff or volunteers. All workshops are hour-long sessions for parents & caregivers and can be attended with or without children. The workshops are designed to share fun and easy activities that can be done during day-to-day routines to build the six skills of early literacy: print motivation, print awareness, phonological awareness, narrative skills, vocabulary and letter knowledge.

Workshops are offered at select library branch locations throughout the year and, by request, can be scheduled at neighborhood locations such as churches, community centers, schools, parent groups and non-profit agencies.

EARLY LITERACY WORKSHOPS SERIES

Fun with Stories During this workshop you and your child will learn different ways to tell stories, read books and tips to help turn book reading into great story telling. The workshop is designed to build print motivation, print awareness and narrative skills.

Fun with Words - During this workshop you and your child will learn different ways to build vocabulary, choose great books to build vocabulary and play with the sounds of words. The workshop is designed to build vocabulary, print motivation and phonological awareness.

Fun with Letters - During this workshop you and your child will learn the milestones for learning the alphabet, ways to play with the sounds of letters and about the different types of alphabet books available for borrowing. The workshop is designed to build print awareness, letter knowledge and phonological awareness.

Fun with Math & Science - During this workshop you and your child will learn different ways to explore the natural world, choose factual books, and build vocabulary necessary for counting, comparing and building an understanding of the scientific world. This workshop is designed to build vocabulary, print motivation and background knowledge, the cumulative knowledge of a child, all necessary ingredients for developing critical thinking skills.

EVENT WORKSHOP

This is a booth style event workshops designed to meet and greet people at an event or community festivals where we share tips and a fun activity to spread awareness about the importance of early literacy and share information about public library services. TRAINING

Early Childhood Educator Training Participants will learn ways to practice building early literacy skills during day-to-day routines in the classroom. Educator training can be requested for each of the workshops above and can be offered in one to four hour lengths of time. Longer training times allow for more depth of subject and hands-on activities. The information resources used at each workshop vary based on the topic area and length of time requested.
